Opener hums but the door does not move

An opener that hums while the garage door stays still needs the door and operator assessed together. Humming is a symptom; it does not by itself confirm a failed motor, capacitor or drive part.

Stop repeated attempts

If the door does not move normally, do not hold a control or repeatedly send commands to see whether the motor starts. Note whether the sound begins immediately, whether the door moves at all and whether a diagnostic indicator is already visible. Stop sooner if there is heat, an unusual smell, visible damage or uneven movement. Do not open the operator housing or touch electrical parts to identify the source of the sound.

Include the door condition in the description

A stalled operator may be trying to move a door with lost lifting support or abnormal resistance. Tell the provider about any bang, impact, loose cable or change in the door's resting position. Do not release a raised or damaged door to separate the motor from the door as a DIY test. The assessment should establish whether the door itself can function correctly before deciding which operator component needs repair.

Distinguish a sound from a model-specific diagnosis

Manufacturer troubleshooting information may describe different cases for an opener that runs, an opener that only makes a sound and a drive that moves without the door. Those distinctions depend on the equipment. Use the exact model and report what was observed from a safe place. A video for a different operator is not evidence that your system needs the same capacitor, board or gear, and internal repairs involve electrical hazards.

Ask for repair and replacement reasoning

Request the confirmed fault, compatible part, related door work and final operating checks. If the operator is older or parts are unavailable, ask how a complete replacement compares and whether existing controls can remain. If a door repair is needed first, have that scope identified separately. Share the city and current position with I-95 Garage Door to confirm model support and availability. A motor-only quote should not leave an unassessed door problem unexplained.

Mention whether the system has a backup battery and whether the sound began during an outage or normal mains-powered use. Do not assume removing the plug removes every power source. Any internal service needs the complete isolation procedure for that particular equipment and power arrangement.
