Garage door will not open: door or opener problem?
A garage door that will not open may have a door, lifting-hardware, control or opener problem. The useful first step is to describe the response without forcing the door or treating every stopped motor as the same failure.
Separate no response from failed movement
Note whether nothing happens, a light flashes, the operator clicks or hums, or the door starts to rise and stops. Those are different patterns. If the problem was observed with one control, tell the service provider which one. Report whether other controls had already worked normally, but do not repeat operation on a visibly damaged door simply to complete a comparison. A recent power interruption, impact or loud bang is relevant context.
For a property with multiple doors, identify the affected opening clearly. Note whether the problem is limited to that door or coincided with a wider power issue. Shared timing is useful context, but it does not prove that the equipment has the same fault.
Observe the door before investigating the opener
Look from clear ground for an uneven bottom edge, displaced roller, hanging cable or obvious section damage. Any of those conditions is a reason to stop using the system. Do not assume the operator can safely pull through the obstruction. Avoid releasing a raised or damaged door to test its weight. Springs and cables can remain hazardous when the motor is unplugged, so an electrical shutdown does not authorize hardware adjustment.
Use the model rather than a generic reset
The owner's manual can identify the correct indicators and ordinary user checks for the exact opener. A model-specific diagnostic code is more useful than a general guess based on a sound. Do not reset travel, increase force, remove covers or bridge controls to make the door move. Such changes can hide the original symptom and introduce a different problem. Keep a note of the condition before any authorized professional work begins.
Ask what the assessment will distinguish
A useful diagnosis explains whether the door can function correctly, whether its lifting system is intact and whether the opener and controls are responding as intended. Ask which finding supports the proposed part replacement. If an opener replacement is suggested, ask whether a separate door repair is needed and what that does to the comparison.
